Landscaping in Wyken

Gardens are won and lost underground. A patio on a proper sub-base, a drive with real edge restraints and a wall with drainage behind it all look the same on day one and completely different after three winters.

In short

Wyken is in the CV2 district, 2.3 miles east of the city centre. We build patios, driveways, retaining and garden walls, fencing and artificial grass there. Ground conditions and levels get checked before anything is quoted, because they decide the base build-up and how much excavation the job really needs.

Key takeaways
  • Fence posts rot at ground level, so the post and its fixing decide how long a fence lasts.
  • Slabs bedded on five dabs of mortar rock within a season. A full bed is the difference.
  • A permeable surface over a conventional compacted sub-base is not permeable.
  • Boundary ownership is set by the title plan, not by which side the fence rails face.
  • Weed membrane stops weeds from below; it cannot stop what blows in and roots on top.
What we cover in Wyken

The work itself, in plain terms

What we build around Co-op Food and the rest of Wyken, from driveways to garden walls.

Patios & paving

Patios built from the ground up — excavation, sub-base, bedding and falls, then the surface everyone actually sees.

Driveways

Driveway construction including the drainage strategy, so run-off is dealt with on the property rather than pushed to the road.

Garden & retaining walls

Garden and retaining walls with proper foundations and, where they hold back ground, the drainage that stops them failing.

Fencing & gates

Boundary fencing and gates, built to a height that complies — including the lower limit next to a road.

Artificial grass

Artificial turf for shaded or heavily used gardens where real grass will not establish, installed on a screeded sub-base.

Garden clearance

Clearing overgrown gardens back to a usable state, with the waste removed under proper duty of care.

Who it is for

Built around how you own the property

Homeowners

Outdoor space that suits how you actually use the garden, rather than what looks good on a drawing.

Landlords

Hard landscaping that survives tenants, weather and years of nobody maintaining it.

New-build & bare plots

Getting the structure right at the start, so the planting has somewhere to succeed.

What we are usually called out to

The jobs that start with a phone call

  • 01

A garden under years of bramble, where nobody is sure where the boundary runs.

  • 02

Decking that is green and slippery from October, built where the sun never reaches it.

  • 03

A soakaway that never worked, dug into clay that will not accept water.

  • 04

Gravel that has migrated across the path and into the house, because nothing was edging it.

  • 05

A lawn that puddles all winter, where the ground was compacted by construction traffic and never broken up.

  • 06

Weeds through block paving joints, where builders' sand was used instead of kiln-dried or angular grit.

What we check on a property in Wyken

Every quote starts with a survey. These are the things we look at on landscaping work in Wyken, and why each one changes the recommendation.

Drainage behind retaining structures

We plan the drainage layer, land drain and weep holes before the wall goes up. Water pressure is what destroys retaining walls, and it cannot be added afterwards.

Existing surface build-up

Whether an old patio or drive can be used as a base or has to come out entirely. Laying over an unsound base is the cheapest way to guarantee failure.

Step and threshold heights

Comfortable, consistent step heights and safe thresholds at doors. Uneven improvised steps are among the most common trip hazards we are asked to put right.

Retaining height and what is above

How much ground a wall holds back, and whether anything bears on the ground above it, determines whether it needs designing rather than simply building.

Sunlight and shade across the day

Shaded areas grow algae on natural stone and will not support real grass. Knowing how the sun moves across the garden changes which materials make sense where.

How the space will actually be used

Furniture, a shed, bins, a car turning, children playing — the intended use decides dimensions and surface choice far more usefully than a standard layout.

Which areas near Wyken do you also cover?

The closest are Walsgrave (about 1 mile away), Henley Green (about 1 mile away), Stoke Heath (about 1.1 miles away) and Ball Hill (about 1.2 miles away). All of them are inside our normal working area, so a property on the boundary is no different to one in the middle of Wyken. If you are unsure which area you count as, the postcode settles it.

Which part of Wyken do you cover?

All of it — the streets around Co-op Food included. Where a property sits matters less to us than what the access is like, which is something we look at on the survey rather than guessing from an address.

What makes a patio last, and why do some sink?

The base. A patio is only as good as what is under it: excavation to a sensible depth, a compacted sub-base of the right material and thickness, and a full mortar bed rather than five dabs under each slab. Patios sink because the sub-base was too thin or not compacted, or because slabs were spot-bedded, leaving voids that fill with water and fail in frost. None of that is visible once the slabs are down, which is exactly why it gets skimped.

Do you work for landlords and commercial clients?

Yes. For rental property the usual brief is low-maintenance and durable rather than ornamental — hard surfacing, sound boundaries and nothing that needs a tenant to look after it. For commercial premises we handle car parking areas, access paths and boundary treatments, working around opening hours where needed.

When does a garden wall need to be a retaining wall?

As soon as it is holding back ground on one side. A free-standing garden wall only has to carry its own weight and the wind; a retaining wall is resisting the pressure of soil and the water in it, which is a far greater force. Retaining walls need adequate foundations, the right thickness, often reinforcement, and — critically — drainage behind them. Over about a metre, or where anything is above, it warrants proper design.

Concrete posts or timber posts?

Concrete posts with gravel boards last far longer, because the part that rots on a timber fence is always the post at ground level where it meets wet soil. Panels can then be swapped without digging anything out. Timber posts look better, particularly with close-board fencing, and are the right choice where appearance matters — but expect to deal with the posts eventually, even pressure-treated ones.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Almost always water. Soil behind a wall holds water, and water adds enormous pressure. Without a drainage layer, a perforated land drain behind the base and weep holes through the face, that pressure builds until the wall bows, cracks or moves. Most of the failed retaining walls we are asked to rebuild look fine from the front and have no drainage at all behind them.
