Landscaping in Stivichall
Gardens are won and lost underground. A patio on a proper sub-base, a drive with real edge restraints and a wall with drainage behind it all look the same on day one and completely different after three winters.

- A gutter or downpipe discharging onto new paving will undo it. Check the drainage first.
- Weed membrane stops weeds from below; it cannot stop what blows in and roots on top.
- Edge restraint is what stops block paving spreading and dropping at the perimeter.
- Slabs bedded on five dabs of mortar rock within a season. A full bed is the difference.
- Boundary ownership is set by the title plan, not by which side the fence rails face.
The work itself, in plain terms
What we build in Stivichall gardens, 1.7 miles south of the city centre.
Patios & paving
Patios laid on a full mortar bed over a properly compacted sub-base, with the fall running away from the house.
Driveways
Driveway construction including the drainage strategy, so run-off is dealt with on the property rather than pushed to the road.
Garden & retaining walls
Retaining and decorative walling, with land drains and weep holes behind anything holding back ground.
Fencing & gates
Boundary fencing and gates, built to a height that complies — including the lower limit next to a road.
Artificial grass
Artificial turf for shaded or heavily used gardens where real grass will not establish, installed on a screeded sub-base.
Garden clearance
Overgrown garden clearance — often the first job, and the one that reveals what is actually there.
Built around how you own the property
Homeowners
A finish that ages well, on foundations you will never have to think about again.
Landlords
Durable surfaces and sound boundaries, priced separately from anything cosmetic.
New-build & bare plots
Turning a builder's rectangle of turf and rubble into something usable, levels and drainage included.
The jobs that start with a phone call
- 01
A downpipe discharging onto a new patio, soaking the wall it runs down.
- 02
A block drive with ruts where the wheels sit and the edges dropping away, from too little sub-base and no edge restraint.
- 03
Decking that is green and slippery from October, built where the sun never reaches it.
- 04
Gravel that has migrated across the path and into the house, because nothing was edging it.
- 05
A retaining wall leaning outwards because nothing was ever drained behind it.
- 06
A raised bed built hard against the house, bridging the damp-proof course with wet soil.
What we check on a property in Stivichall
Every quote starts with a survey. These are the things we look at on landscaping work in Stivichall, and why each one changes the recommendation.
Access for materials and spoil
Whether a barrow, a digger or only a bucket chain can reach the work area. On enclosed rear gardens this is frequently the single biggest cost driver.
Retaining height and what is above
How much ground a wall holds back, and whether anything bears on the ground above it, determines whether it needs designing rather than simply building.
Height of the damp-proof course
Any surface against the house must finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course. We measure it at survey, because getting this wrong creates internal damp that looks like a building fault.
Step and threshold heights
Comfortable, consistent step heights and safe thresholds at doors. Uneven improvised steps are among the most common trip hazards we are asked to put right.
Spoil volume and disposal
We calculate how much material is coming out and how it leaves site. It is a large, legitimate part of the cost and it should be in the quote, not a surprise.
How the space will actually be used
Furniture, a shed, bins, a car turning, children playing — the intended use decides dimensions and surface choice far more usefully than a standard layout.

Speak to us today0786 5778332Which part of Stivichall do you cover?
All of it — the streets around West Orchard United Reformed Church included. Where a property sits matters less to us than what the access is like, which is something we look at on the survey rather than guessing from an address.
How quickly can you get to Stivichall?
Quickly — it is about 1.7 miles south of the city centre. Short distances are the main reason we can offer same-week surveys and come back promptly if something needs a second look.
Concrete posts or timber posts?
Concrete posts with gravel boards last far longer, because the part that rots on a timber fence is always the post at ground level where it meets wet soil. Panels can then be swapped without digging anything out. Timber posts look better, particularly with close-board fencing, and are the right choice where appearance matters — but expect to deal with the posts eventually, even pressure-treated ones.
What is a soakaway and when do I need one?
A soakaway is an underground void, usually crates or stone, that takes surface water and lets it disperse into the surrounding ground. You need one when you are adding hard surfacing and have nowhere to send the run-off, and it is how a new driveway can satisfy the drainage requirement. It has to be sized for the area it serves and sited a sensible distance from buildings, and it only works if the ground beneath actually drains.
Porcelain or natural stone paving?
Porcelain is dimensionally consistent, very low porosity, resists staining and algae, and keeps its colour — but it needs a slurry primer on the back when bedding, and cutting it requires the right blades. Natural stone such as sandstone or limestone has more character and variation, costs less in the mid range, but is porous, so it weathers, grows algae in shade and can stain. Both last decades when laid properly.
Why do retaining walls fail?
Almost always water. Soil behind a wall holds water, and water adds enormous pressure. Without a drainage layer, a perforated land drain behind the base and weep holes through the face, that pressure builds until the wall bows, cracks or moves. Most of the failed retaining walls we are asked to rebuild look fine from the front and have no drainage at all behind them.
How high can a fence be?
In England, generally up to two metres without planning permission, dropping to one metre where the boundary adjoins a highway used by vehicles, including a front garden fence facing the road. Different rules can apply to listed buildings and some conservation areas. If a fence is going in near a road, the one metre limit is the one that catches people out.
