Landscaping in Cheylesmore
Gardens are won and lost underground. A patio on a proper sub-base, a drive with real edge restraints and a wall with drainage behind it all look the same on day one and completely different after three winters.

We carry out hard landscaping in Cheylesmore, 1 mile south of Coventry city centre — patios and paving, driveways, garden and retaining walls, fencing and gates, artificial grass and full garden clearance. The part that decides how long it lasts is the base and the drainage underneath, which is where most of our attention goes.

- Fence posts rot at ground level, so the post and its fixing decide how long a fence lasts.
- Boundary ownership is set by the title plan, not by which side the fence rails face.
- Retaining walls fail from water pressure behind them, not from weak brickwork.
- Deep beds need far less work than narrow borders, because planting closes over the soil.
- Sub-base depth and compaction decide whether paving stays flat — not the slab you choose.
The work itself, in plain terms
What we build in Cheylesmore gardens, 1 mile south of the city centre.
Patios & paving
Paving in porcelain, natural stone or concrete, set out and bedded so it does not rock, sink or hold water.
Driveways
New driveways built on a base specified for vehicle loading, not for looks.
Garden & retaining walls
Walls built to suit what they are doing — free-standing is one job, retaining soil and water is another entirely.
Fencing & gates
Boundary fencing and gates, built to a height that complies — including the lower limit next to a road.
Artificial grass
Artificial grass installation — the base build-up is what decides whether it stays flat and weed-free.
Garden clearance
Overgrown garden clearance — often the first job, and the one that reveals what is actually there.
Built around how you own the property
Homeowners
Work done once and properly, with the base and the drainage right before anything visible goes down.
Landlords
Low-maintenance outdoor space that will not become a trip hazard or a between-tenancy job every time.
New-build & bare plots
Starting from compacted subsoil and buried debris, which is what most new gardens actually are.
The jobs that start with a phone call
- 01
A lawn that puddles all winter, where the ground was compacted by construction traffic and never broken up.
- 02
Weeds through block paving joints, where builders' sand was used instead of kiln-dried or angular grit.
- 03
Decking that is green and slippery from October, built where the sun never reaches it.
- 04
A retaining wall leaning outwards because nothing was ever drained behind it.
- 05
A soakaway that never worked, dug into clay that will not accept water.
- 06
A block drive with ruts where the wheels sit and the edges dropping away, from too little sub-base and no edge restraint.
What we check on a property in Cheylesmore
Every quote starts with a survey. These are the things we look at on landscaping work in Cheylesmore, and why each one changes the recommendation.
Boundary ownership
Before any fence or wall work we establish who owns the boundary and where the line actually runs. Deeds settle it; assumption causes disputes.
Permeability and the surfacing rules
For front gardens we check the area involved and how run-off will be handled, so the finished job complies rather than needing a retrospective fix.
Tree positions and root protection
Roots affect excavation, and some trees are protected by preservation orders or conservation area status. We check before anything is dug near one.
Drainage behind retaining structures
We plan the drainage layer, land drain and weep holes before the wall goes up. Water pressure is what destroys retaining walls, and it cannot be added afterwards.
Lighting and power
If lighting or an outdoor socket might be wanted later, ducting goes in while the ground is open. Adding it afterwards means digging up a finished surface.
Existing walls and their foundations
Where a wall is being retained or built onto, we check what it is standing on. Many older garden walls have almost no foundation and will not take additional load.

Speak to us today0786 5778332Do you work on properties near Asda?
Yes. Asda is one of the landmarks we use to describe where we work in Cheylesmore, and we take on landscaping jobs throughout the surrounding streets. Access and parking get checked at survey, so the quote fits the property.
What else is near Cheylesmore that you cover?
Cheylesmore sits next to Lower Stoke (about 0.7 miles away), Stivichall (about 0.8 miles away), Finham (about 1.2 miles away) and Stoke Aldermoor (about 1.3 miles away). We work across the whole of that cluster, which is part of why we can usually get to a survey quickly — we are often already nearby.
When does a garden wall need to be a retaining wall?
As soon as it is holding back ground on one side. A free-standing garden wall only has to carry its own weight and the wind; a retaining wall is resisting the pressure of soil and the water in it, which is a far greater force. Retaining walls need adequate foundations, the right thickness, often reinforcement, and — critically — drainage behind them. Over about a metre, or where anything is above, it warrants proper design.
Why do retaining walls fail?
Almost always water. Soil behind a wall holds water, and water adds enormous pressure. Without a drainage layer, a perforated land drain behind the base and weep holes through the face, that pressure builds until the wall bows, cracks or moves. Most of the failed retaining walls we are asked to rebuild look fine from the front and have no drainage at all behind them.
What goes under artificial grass?
Excavation, a compacted stone sub-base, a layer of sharp sand or granite dust screeded level, a weed membrane and then the grass itself, joined with seaming tape and adhesive and pinned at the edges. Laying it over existing turf or soil is the usual cause of failure: it goes lumpy as the ground beneath settles, and weeds come through at the joints and edges within a season.
Porcelain or natural stone paving?
Porcelain is dimensionally consistent, very low porosity, resists staining and algae, and keeps its colour — but it needs a slurry primer on the back when bedding, and cutting it requires the right blades. Natural stone such as sandstone or limestone has more character and variation, costs less in the mid range, but is porous, so it weathers, grows algae in shade and can stain. Both last decades when laid properly.
Which way should a patio fall?
Away from the house, always, at a gentle fall of roughly 1 in 60 to 1 in 80 — enough to shed water without being noticeable underfoot. It must also finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course. A patio laid level, or laid up to the brickwork above the damp-proof course, will put water into the wall, and that shows up as internal damp that no amount of treatment inside will fix.
