Landscaping in Whitley

Gardens are won and lost underground. A patio on a proper sub-base, a drive with real edge restraints and a wall with drainage behind it all look the same on day one and completely different after three winters.

Working in Whitley

Whitley sits in the CV3 postcode district, south-east of Coventry city centre, with Cheylesmore and Stoke Aldermoor as its closest neighbours.

It is one of the areas where our work is most often a mix: older housing that has been extended or re-roofed over the years, alongside more recent building that is now reaching the age where roofline, render and guttering start needing attention.

We cover Whitley for every trade. If you are nearer Cheylesmore or Stoke Aldermoor, those pages cover the same work and the same team.

Key takeaways
  • Sub-base depth and compaction decide whether paving stays flat — not the slab you choose.
  • Deep beds need far less work than narrow borders, because planting closes over the soil.
  • Patios must finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course and fall away from the house.
  • Fence posts rot at ground level, so the post and its fixing decide how long a fence lasts.
  • Weed membrane stops weeds from below; it cannot stop what blows in and roots on top.
What we cover in Whitley

The work itself, in plain terms

The landscaping work we carry out on Whitley properties, from patios and driveways to walls, fencing and clearance.

Patios & paving

Paving in porcelain, natural stone or concrete, set out and bedded so it does not rock, sink or hold water.

Driveways

Driveway construction including the drainage strategy, so run-off is dealt with on the property rather than pushed to the road.

Garden & retaining walls

Walls built to suit what they are doing — free-standing is one job, retaining soil and water is another entirely.

Fencing & gates

Boundary fencing and gates, built to a height that complies — including the lower limit next to a road.

Artificial grass

Artificial grass on a proper permeable base with membrane and pinned edges, not laid over existing turf.

Garden clearance

Full clearance including removal and legal disposal, with care taken over nesting season.

Who it is for

Built around how you own the property

Homeowners

A garden you can use, built so it still looks right in five years rather than five months.

Landlords

Low-maintenance outdoor space that will not become a trip hazard or a between-tenancy job every time.

New-build & bare plots

Starting from compacted subsoil and buried debris, which is what most new gardens actually are.

What we are usually called out to

The jobs that start with a phone call

  • 01

A lawn that puddles all winter, where the ground was compacted by construction traffic and never broken up.

  • 02

A fence that came down in the first gale, with new panels screwed to posts that had already rotted at ground level.

  • 03

Decking that is green and slippery from October, built where the sun never reaches it.

  • 04

A block drive with ruts where the wheels sit and the edges dropping away, from too little sub-base and no edge restraint.

  • 05

Weeds through block paving joints, where builders' sand was used instead of kiln-dried or angular grit.

  • 06

Steps that have settled unevenly, laid on made ground that was never compacted.

On site in Whitley

What we check on a property in Whitley

Every quote starts with a survey. These are the things we look at on landscaping work in Whitley, and why each one changes the recommendation.

Access for materials and spoil

Whether a barrow, a digger or only a bucket chain can reach the work area. On enclosed rear gardens this is frequently the single biggest cost driver.

Step and threshold heights

Comfortable, consistent step heights and safe thresholds at doors. Uneven improvised steps are among the most common trip hazards we are asked to put right.

Existing walls and their foundations

Where a wall is being retained or built onto, we check what it is standing on. Many older garden walls have almost no foundation and will not take additional load.

Drainage behind retaining structures

We plan the drainage layer, land drain and weep holes before the wall goes up. Water pressure is what destroys retaining walls, and it cannot be added afterwards.

Height of the damp-proof course

Any surface against the house must finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course. We measure it at survey, because getting this wrong creates internal damp that looks like a building fault.

Spoil volume and disposal

We calculate how much material is coming out and how it leaves site. It is a large, legitimate part of the cost and it should be in the quote, not a surprise.

Landscaping in Whitley — your questions answered

Still have a question? Our local team is happy to help — no pressure, no jargon.

Speak to us today0786 5778332
Do you cover the CV3 postcode area?

Yes. Whitley falls in CV3, which is part of our normal working area, so there is no travel surcharge and no minimum job value.

Have you worked around Whitley Abbey Primary School?

Whitley Abbey Primary School is in the part of Whitley we cover, and landscaping work there is routine for us. Every quote still starts with a survey of the actual property, because no two are the same even on one street.

Do I need planning permission for a driveway?

In England you need permission to lay more than five square metres of hard surfacing between the front of the house and a highway, unless the surface is porous or the water is directed to a permeable area within the property. Permeable block paving, resin-bound and gravel all satisfy this; impermeable concrete or tarmac draining straight to the road does not. It is a rule about where the water goes rather than about the material itself.

What happens to the waste?

It is removed and disposed of legally, and it is a genuine part of the cost that people underestimate. Excavating a patio produces several tonnes of spoil. We carry waste under the proper duty of care, and if you want the detail of where it goes we will tell you — fly-tipped garden waste still traces back to the property it came from.

Can you clear a badly overgrown garden?

Yes, and it is a common first job. Clearance means cutting back, removing, and taking away the waste, which is usually the larger part of the cost. Two things to flag at survey: a heavily overgrown garden can hide structures, drains and inspection chambers nobody knew about, and clearance between March and August needs care over nesting birds, which are legally protected while nesting.

What goes under artificial grass?

Excavation, a compacted stone sub-base, a layer of sharp sand or granite dust screeded level, a weed membrane and then the grass itself, joined with seaming tape and adhesive and pinned at the edges. Laying it over existing turf or soil is the usual cause of failure: it goes lumpy as the ground beneath settles, and weeds come through at the joints and edges within a season.

Who owns the fence between me and my neighbour?

There is no universal rule — the common belief that it is always the left-hand boundary is a myth. Ownership is set out in the title deeds, sometimes marked with a T mark on the plan showing which side carries the responsibility. It is worth checking before replacing a fence, both to know who should pay and because taking down a neighbour's fence without agreement causes avoidable disputes.
