Landscaping in Westwood Heath
Gardens are won and lost underground. A patio on a proper sub-base, a drive with real edge restraints and a wall with drainage behind it all look the same on day one and completely different after three winters.

Landscaping across Westwood Heath and the CV4 district, including Canley, Tile Hill and Mount Nod. Patios, driveways, walls, fencing, artificial grass and clearance. We design in the falls and the drainage first, because a surface that sheds water onto a neighbour or back towards the house is a problem that paving over will not solve.
Working in Westwood Heath
Westwood Heath lies 3.3 miles south-west of Coventry city centre, in the CV4 postcode district.
Within walking distance you will find Greek orthodox Church of the Holy Transfiguration and The National Mathematics and Science College, and we work on properties throughout the streets around them.
The nearest areas we also cover are Canley (0.8 miles) and Tile Hill (1.2 miles), so work in Westwood Heath sits inside the same run of the city.

- Clay backfill behind a wall holds water and swells. Clean stone goes back instead.
- Deep beds need far less work than narrow borders, because planting closes over the soil.
- More than 5 square metres of impermeable driveway draining to the road needs planning permission.
- Fence posts rot at ground level, so the post and its fixing decide how long a fence lasts.
- A permeable surface over a conventional compacted sub-base is not permeable.
The work itself, in plain terms
The landscaping work we take on across Westwood Heath (CV4), from a single patio to a whole garden rebuilt.
Patios & paving
Patios built from the ground up — excavation, sub-base, bedding and falls, then the surface everyone actually sees.
Driveways
Driveway construction including the drainage strategy, so run-off is dealt with on the property rather than pushed to the road.
Garden & retaining walls
Walls built to suit what they are doing — free-standing is one job, retaining soil and water is another entirely.
Fencing & gates
Boundary fencing and gates, built to a height that complies — including the lower limit next to a road.
Artificial grass
Artificial grass on a proper permeable base with membrane and pinned edges, not laid over existing turf.
Garden clearance
Full clearance including removal and legal disposal, with care taken over nesting season.
Built around how you own the property
Homeowners
A garden you can use, built so it still looks right in five years rather than five months.
Landlords
Low-maintenance outdoor space that will not become a trip hazard or a between-tenancy job every time.
New-build & bare plots
Turning a builder's rectangle of turf and rubble into something usable, levels and drainage included.
The jobs that start with a phone call
- 01
A garden under years of bramble, where nobody is sure where the boundary runs.
- 02
A lawn that puddles all winter, where the ground was compacted by construction traffic and never broken up.
- 03
Artificial grass gone lumpy within two years, laid straight over the old turf with no screeded base.
- 04
A raised bed built hard against the house, bridging the damp-proof course with wet soil.
- 05
A retaining wall leaning outwards because nothing was ever drained behind it.
- 06
A downpipe discharging onto a new patio, soaking the wall it runs down.
What we check on a property in Westwood Heath
Every quote starts with a survey. These are the things we look at on landscaping work in Westwood Heath, and why each one changes the recommendation.
Lighting and power
If lighting or an outdoor socket might be wanted later, ducting goes in while the ground is open. Adding it afterwards means digging up a finished surface.
Height of the damp-proof course
Any surface against the house must finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course. We measure it at survey, because getting this wrong creates internal damp that looks like a building fault.
Gate positions and swing
Which way a gate opens, what it clears and whether there is room for it matters more once it is installed. Worth settling on site.
Permeability and the surfacing rules
For front gardens we check the area involved and how run-off will be handled, so the finished job complies rather than needing a retrospective fix.
Sunlight and shade across the day
Shaded areas grow algae on natural stone and will not support real grass. Knowing how the sun moves across the garden changes which materials make sense where.
Drainage behind retaining structures
We plan the drainage layer, land drain and weep holes before the wall goes up. Water pressure is what destroys retaining walls, and it cannot be added afterwards.

Westwood Heath is roughly 3.3 miles south-west of Coventry city centre. That is close enough that a survey can normally be arranged within a few days, and close enough that coming back afterwards is never a problem.
Which areas near Westwood Heath do you also cover?
The closest are Canley (about 0.8 miles away), Tile Hill (about 1.2 miles away), Mount Nod (about 1.9 miles away) and Eastern Green (about 2.1 miles away). All of them are inside our normal working area, so a property on the boundary is no different to one in the middle of Westwood Heath. If you are unsure which area you count as, the postcode settles it.
What makes a patio last, and why do some sink?
The base. A patio is only as good as what is under it: excavation to a sensible depth, a compacted sub-base of the right material and thickness, and a full mortar bed rather than five dabs under each slab. Patios sink because the sub-base was too thin or not compacted, or because slabs were spot-bedded, leaving voids that fill with water and fail in frost. None of that is visible once the slabs are down, which is exactly why it gets skimped.
Which way should a patio fall?
Away from the house, always, at a gentle fall of roughly 1 in 60 to 1 in 80 — enough to shed water without being noticeable underfoot. It must also finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course. A patio laid level, or laid up to the brickwork above the damp-proof course, will put water into the wall, and that shows up as internal damp that no amount of treatment inside will fix.
What about Japanese knotweed?
If it is present, that changes things. It is not something to dig out or put in a skip — it spreads from tiny fragments and is classed as controlled waste, so cutting or moving it incorrectly makes the problem larger and can create a legal liability. It needs identifying properly and a specialist treatment or removal plan. We will tell you if we think we are looking at it rather than clearing around it.
Why do retaining walls fail?
Almost always water. Soil behind a wall holds water, and water adds enormous pressure. Without a drainage layer, a perforated land drain behind the base and weep holes through the face, that pressure builds until the wall bows, cracks or moves. Most of the failed retaining walls we are asked to rebuild look fine from the front and have no drainage at all behind them.
Do I need planning permission for a driveway?
In England you need permission to lay more than five square metres of hard surfacing between the front of the house and a highway, unless the surface is porous or the water is directed to a permeable area within the property. Permeable block paving, resin-bound and gravel all satisfy this; impermeable concrete or tarmac draining straight to the road does not. It is a rule about where the water goes rather than about the material itself.
