Landscaping in Courthouse Green
Gardens are won and lost underground. A patio on a proper sub-base, a drive with real edge restraints and a wall with drainage behind it all look the same on day one and completely different after three winters.

- Patios must finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course and fall away from the house.
- Boundary ownership is set by the title plan, not by which side the fence rails face.
- Sub-base depth and compaction decide whether paving stays flat — not the slab you choose.
- Clay backfill behind a wall holds water and swells. Clean stone goes back instead.
- Retaining walls fail from water pressure behind them, not from weak brickwork.
The work itself, in plain terms
The landscaping work we take on across Courthouse Green (CV6), from a single patio to a whole garden rebuilt.
Patios & paving
Patios laid on a full mortar bed over a properly compacted sub-base, with the fall running away from the house.
Driveways
Driveway construction including the drainage strategy, so run-off is dealt with on the property rather than pushed to the road.
Garden & retaining walls
Garden and retaining walls with proper foundations and, where they hold back ground, the drainage that stops them failing.
Fencing & gates
Boundary fencing and gates, built to a height that complies — including the lower limit next to a road.
Artificial grass
Artificial grass installation — the base build-up is what decides whether it stays flat and weed-free.
Garden clearance
Clearing overgrown gardens back to a usable state, with the waste removed under proper duty of care.
Built around how you own the property
Homeowners
A finish that ages well, on foundations you will never have to think about again.
Landlords
Low-maintenance outdoor space that will not become a trip hazard or a between-tenancy job every time.
New-build & bare plots
Starting from compacted subsoil and buried debris, which is what most new gardens actually are.
The jobs that start with a phone call
- 01
Artificial grass gone lumpy within two years, laid straight over the old turf with no screeded base.
- 02
A patio built up above the damp-proof course, with damp now showing on the inside of that wall.
- 03
A lawn that puddles all winter, where the ground was compacted by construction traffic and never broken up.
- 04
A block drive with ruts where the wheels sit and the edges dropping away, from too little sub-base and no edge restraint.
- 05
Gravel that has migrated across the path and into the house, because nothing was edging it.
- 06
Steps that have settled unevenly, laid on made ground that was never compacted.
What we check on a property in Courthouse Green
Every quote starts with a survey. These are the things we look at on landscaping work in Courthouse Green, and why each one changes the recommendation.
Height of the damp-proof course
Any surface against the house must finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course. We measure it at survey, because getting this wrong creates internal damp that looks like a building fault.
Gate positions and swing
Which way a gate opens, what it clears and whether there is room for it matters more once it is installed. Worth settling on site.
Permeability and the surfacing rules
For front gardens we check the area involved and how run-off will be handled, so the finished job complies rather than needing a retrospective fix.
Lighting and power
If lighting or an outdoor socket might be wanted later, ducting goes in while the ground is open. Adding it afterwards means digging up a finished surface.
Nesting season and protected species
Clearance between March and August needs care over nesting birds, which are legally protected. We check hedges and dense growth before cutting.
Drains, gullies and inspection chambers
We locate them before designing levels. Covers have to stay accessible, and a chamber discovered mid-excavation changes the layout at the worst possible moment.

Tallants Road green space is in the part of Courthouse Green we cover, and landscaping work there is routine for us. Every quote still starts with a survey of the actual property, because no two are the same even on one street.
How quickly can you get to Courthouse Green?
Quickly — it is about 1.9 miles north-east of the city centre. Short distances are the main reason we can offer same-week surveys and come back promptly if something needs a second look.
What happens to the waste?
It is removed and disposed of legally, and it is a genuine part of the cost that people underestimate. Excavating a patio produces several tonnes of spoil. We carry waste under the proper duty of care, and if you want the detail of where it goes we will tell you — fly-tipped garden waste still traces back to the property it came from.
Which way should a patio fall?
Away from the house, always, at a gentle fall of roughly 1 in 60 to 1 in 80 — enough to shed water without being noticeable underfoot. It must also finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course. A patio laid level, or laid up to the brickwork above the damp-proof course, will put water into the wall, and that shows up as internal damp that no amount of treatment inside will fix.
What about Japanese knotweed?
If it is present, that changes things. It is not something to dig out or put in a skip — it spreads from tiny fragments and is classed as controlled waste, so cutting or moving it incorrectly makes the problem larger and can create a legal liability. It needs identifying properly and a specialist treatment or removal plan. We will tell you if we think we are looking at it rather than clearing around it.
My garden floods or stays waterlogged. What can be done?
First find out why: compacted soil, heavy clay, a high water table, a low spot with nowhere to drain, or water being shed onto the garden from a hard surface or a downpipe. The fixes differ completely — aeration and organic matter for compaction, a land drain to a soakaway for a genuine drainage problem, or regrading levels. Laying a patio over a wet garden moves the water somewhere else rather than solving it.
What is a soakaway and when do I need one?
A soakaway is an underground void, usually crates or stone, that takes surface water and lets it disperse into the surrounding ground. You need one when you are adding hard surfacing and have nowhere to send the run-off, and it is how a new driveway can satisfy the drainage requirement. It has to be sized for the area it serves and sited a sensible distance from buildings, and it only works if the ground beneath actually drains.
