Landscaping in Ansty
Gardens are won and lost underground. A patio on a proper sub-base, a drive with real edge restraints and a wall with drainage behind it all look the same on day one and completely different after three winters.

Working in Ansty
Ansty lies 4.6 miles north-east of Coventry city centre.
Within walking distance you will find St James and Shilton Baptist Church, and we work on properties throughout the streets around them.
The nearest areas we also cover are Walsgrave (1.5 miles) and Henley Green (2 miles), so work in Ansty sits inside the same run of the city.
- St James
- Shilton Baptist Church
- More than 5 square metres of impermeable driveway draining to the road needs planning permission.
- Boundary ownership is set by the title plan, not by which side the fence rails face.
- A permeable surface over a conventional compacted sub-base is not permeable.
- Artificial grass is only as flat as the screeded base beneath it.
- A gutter or downpipe discharging onto new paving will undo it. Check the drainage first.
The work itself, in plain terms
The landscaping work we carry out on Ansty properties, from patios and driveways to walls, fencing and clearance.
Patios & paving
Patios laid on a full mortar bed over a properly compacted sub-base, with the fall running away from the house.
Driveways
Driveway construction including the drainage strategy, so run-off is dealt with on the property rather than pushed to the road.
Garden & retaining walls
Retaining and decorative walling, with land drains and weep holes behind anything holding back ground.
Fencing & gates
Fencing and gates with concrete posts and gravel boards where longevity matters, timber where appearance does.
Artificial grass
Artificial turf for shaded or heavily used gardens where real grass will not establish, installed on a screeded sub-base.
Garden clearance
Clearing overgrown gardens back to a usable state, with the waste removed under proper duty of care.
Built around how you own the property
Homeowners
Work done once and properly, with the base and the drainage right before anything visible goes down.
Landlords
Low-maintenance outdoor space that will not become a trip hazard or a between-tenancy job every time.
New-build & bare plots
Getting the structure right at the start, so the planting has somewhere to succeed.
The jobs that start with a phone call
- 01
Steps that have settled unevenly, laid on made ground that was never compacted.
- 02
Paving that rocks underfoot, because the slabs were spot bedded on dabs of mortar rather than a full bed.
- 03
A downpipe discharging onto a new patio, soaking the wall it runs down.
- 04
A patio built up above the damp-proof course, with damp now showing on the inside of that wall.
- 05
A lawn that puddles all winter, where the ground was compacted by construction traffic and never broken up.
- 06
A fence that came down in the first gale, with new panels screwed to posts that had already rotted at ground level.
What we check on a property in Ansty
Every quote starts with a survey. These are the things we look at on landscaping work in Ansty, and why each one changes the recommendation.
Existing surface build-up
Whether an old patio or drive can be used as a base or has to come out entirely. Laying over an unsound base is the cheapest way to guarantee failure.
Retaining height and what is above
How much ground a wall holds back, and whether anything bears on the ground above it, determines whether it needs designing rather than simply building.
Levels and where water currently goes
We take levels across the area and work out where water runs now. Changing a surface changes drainage, and the commonest complaint after landscaping is water appearing somewhere new.
Height of the damp-proof course
Any surface against the house must finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course. We measure it at survey, because getting this wrong creates internal damp that looks like a building fault.
Gate positions and swing
Which way a gate opens, what it clears and whether there is room for it matters more once it is installed. Worth settling on site.
How the space will actually be used
Furniture, a shed, bins, a car turning, children playing — the intended use decides dimensions and surface choice far more usefully than a standard layout.

Speak to us today0786 5778332Do you only work in Ansty, or the surrounding streets too?
Both. Work in Ansty usually takes us into Walsgrave (about 1.5 miles away), Henley Green (about 2 miles away), Bell Green (about 2.5 miles away) and Wyken (about 2.5 miles away) as well, and we quote for all of them on the same terms. There is no boundary line that changes the price.
Which part of Ansty do you cover?
All of it — the streets around St James included. Where a property sits matters less to us than what the access is like, which is something we look at on the survey rather than guessing from an address.
Is artificial grass worth it?
It depends on the garden and who uses it. It works well in small, shaded or heavily used gardens where real grass will not establish, and for anyone who wants a usable surface year-round with no mowing. The honest drawbacks: it gets hot in direct summer sun, it needs a proper permeable base and weed membrane or it will sink and sprout at the edges, it still needs brushing and the occasional rinse, and it supports no wildlife. It is a surface, not a lawn.
Do I need planning permission for a driveway?
In England you need permission to lay more than five square metres of hard surfacing between the front of the house and a highway, unless the surface is porous or the water is directed to a permeable area within the property. Permeable block paving, resin-bound and gravel all satisfy this; impermeable concrete or tarmac draining straight to the road does not. It is a rule about where the water goes rather than about the material itself.
Block paving, resin or tarmac — which is best for a driveway?
Permeable block paving handles drainage by design, individual blocks can be lifted and replaced after a service trench, and it is the most forgiving of settlement. Resin-bound gives a smooth seamless finish and is porous when laid on an open-graded base, but it depends entirely on the quality of the base and is harder to patch invisibly. Tarmac is cost-effective over large areas but is not porous, so it needs drainage designed in. Mostly it comes down to base condition and how the drainage will be handled.
Which way should a patio fall?
Away from the house, always, at a gentle fall of roughly 1 in 60 to 1 in 80 — enough to shed water without being noticeable underfoot. It must also finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course. A patio laid level, or laid up to the brickwork above the damp-proof course, will put water into the wall, and that shows up as internal damp that no amount of treatment inside will fix.
What makes a patio last, and why do some sink?
The base. A patio is only as good as what is under it: excavation to a sensible depth, a compacted sub-base of the right material and thickness, and a full mortar bed rather than five dabs under each slab. Patios sink because the sub-base was too thin or not compacted, or because slabs were spot-bedded, leaving voids that fill with water and fail in frost. None of that is visible once the slabs are down, which is exactly why it gets skimped.
