Landscaping in Coundon

Gardens are won and lost underground. A patio on a proper sub-base, a drive with real edge restraints and a wall with drainage behind it all look the same on day one and completely different after three winters.

Key takeaways
  • Retaining walls fail from water pressure behind them, not from weak brickwork.
  • Artificial grass is only as flat as the screeded base beneath it.
  • Fence posts rot at ground level, so the post and its fixing decide how long a fence lasts.
  • Standing water two days after rain means the fall is wrong, not that the surface failed.
  • Patios must finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course and fall away from the house.
What we cover in Coundon

The work itself, in plain terms

The landscaping work we carry out on Coundon properties, from patios and driveways to walls, fencing and clearance.

Patios & paving

Paving in porcelain, natural stone or concrete, set out and bedded so it does not rock, sink or hold water.

Driveways

Driveway construction including the drainage strategy, so run-off is dealt with on the property rather than pushed to the road.

Garden & retaining walls

Walls built to suit what they are doing — free-standing is one job, retaining soil and water is another entirely.

Fencing & gates

Boundary fencing and gates, built to a height that complies — including the lower limit next to a road.

Artificial grass

Artificial grass on a proper permeable base with membrane and pinned edges, not laid over existing turf.

Garden clearance

Full clearance including removal and legal disposal, with care taken over nesting season.

Who it is for

Built around how you own the property

Homeowners

A garden you can use, built so it still looks right in five years rather than five months.

Landlords

Low-maintenance outdoor space that will not become a trip hazard or a between-tenancy job every time.

New-build & bare plots

Starting from compacted subsoil and buried debris, which is what most new gardens actually are.

What we are usually called out to

The jobs that start with a phone call

  • 01

A raised bed built hard against the house, bridging the damp-proof course with wet soil.

  • 02

A garden under years of bramble, where nobody is sure where the boundary runs.

  • 03

A block drive with ruts where the wheels sit and the edges dropping away, from too little sub-base and no edge restraint.

  • 04

Artificial grass gone lumpy within two years, laid straight over the old turf with no screeded base.

  • 05

A downpipe discharging onto a new patio, soaking the wall it runs down.

  • 06

A patio built up above the damp-proof course, with damp now showing on the inside of that wall.

What we check on a property in Coundon

Every quote starts with a survey. These are the things we look at on landscaping work in Coundon, and why each one changes the recommendation.

Drains, gullies and inspection chambers

We locate them before designing levels. Covers have to stay accessible, and a chamber discovered mid-excavation changes the layout at the worst possible moment.

Height of the damp-proof course

Any surface against the house must finish at least 150mm below the damp-proof course. We measure it at survey, because getting this wrong creates internal damp that looks like a building fault.

Spoil volume and disposal

We calculate how much material is coming out and how it leaves site. It is a large, legitimate part of the cost and it should be in the quote, not a surprise.

Ground conditions and what is under the topsoil

Clay, made ground, old foundations or buried hardcore all change the excavation and the base build-up. A trial dig is sometimes the only honest way to price the groundworks.

Tree positions and root protection

Roots affect excavation, and some trees are protected by preservation orders or conservation area status. We check before anything is dug near one.

How the space will actually be used

Furniture, a shed, bins, a car turning, children playing — the intended use decides dimensions and surface choice far more usefully than a standard layout.

Landscaping in Coundon — your questions answered

Still have a question? Our local team is happy to help — no pressure, no jargon.

Speak to us today0786 5778332
Do you work on properties near Christ The King RC Infant School?

Yes. Christ The King RC Infant School is one of the landmarks we use to describe where we work in Coundon, and we take on landscaping jobs throughout the surrounding streets. Access and parking get checked at survey, so the quote fits the property.

Do you only work in Coundon, or the surrounding streets too?

Both. Work in Coundon usually takes us into Radford (about 0.8 miles away), Bishopsgate Green (about 1.1 miles away), Spon End (about 1.2 miles away) and Allesley (about 1.2 miles away) as well, and we quote for all of them on the same terms. There is no boundary line that changes the price.

Who owns the fence between me and my neighbour?

There is no universal rule — the common belief that it is always the left-hand boundary is a myth. Ownership is set out in the title deeds, sometimes marked with a T mark on the plan showing which side carries the responsibility. It is worth checking before replacing a fence, both to know who should pay and because taking down a neighbour's fence without agreement causes avoidable disputes.

What makes a patio last, and why do some sink?

The base. A patio is only as good as what is under it: excavation to a sensible depth, a compacted sub-base of the right material and thickness, and a full mortar bed rather than five dabs under each slab. Patios sink because the sub-base was too thin or not compacted, or because slabs were spot-bedded, leaving voids that fill with water and fail in frost. None of that is visible once the slabs are down, which is exactly why it gets skimped.

Porcelain or natural stone paving?

Porcelain is dimensionally consistent, very low porosity, resists staining and algae, and keeps its colour — but it needs a slurry primer on the back when bedding, and cutting it requires the right blades. Natural stone such as sandstone or limestone has more character and variation, costs less in the mid range, but is porous, so it weathers, grows algae in shade and can stain. Both last decades when laid properly.

Can you clear a badly overgrown garden?

Yes, and it is a common first job. Clearance means cutting back, removing, and taking away the waste, which is usually the larger part of the cost. Two things to flag at survey: a heavily overgrown garden can hide structures, drains and inspection chambers nobody knew about, and clearance between March and August needs care over nesting birds, which are legally protected while nesting.

Concrete posts or timber posts?

Concrete posts with gravel boards last far longer, because the part that rots on a timber fence is always the post at ground level where it meets wet soil. Panels can then be swapped without digging anything out. Timber posts look better, particularly with close-board fencing, and are the right choice where appearance matters — but expect to deal with the posts eventually, even pressure-treated ones.
